The Sports Committee was founded by late Charlie Mancuso. After he passed, Bob Mancuso, Sr. took the chair and led the Sports Committee to new heights. After Bob Sr.’s passing in 2015, his three sons Bob Jr. (Chairman), Mike and Joe continue to make an impact to the Omaha Sports Scene. The Committee is a non-profit organization of Sports minded people who wish to see the Sports in Omaha and the Midwest flourish.
The Committee is and has been the steering committee in many major Sporting activities brought to the city throughout the years, such as the Outland Trophy Award Dinner Sponsored by Werner Enterprises, the Outland Trophy Semi-Finalists Announcement Reception, the Corporate Cycling Challenge Bicycle Ride, Annual Golf Tournament, Omaha Biathlon, the KC Omaha Kings Basketball, Omaha Racers Basketball, Big 8 Volleyball & Softball Championships, Omaha Golden Gloves, Heavyweight Championship Fight between Joe Frazier & Ron Stander, Super Series Baseball Tournaments, High School Regional Legion Baseball Tournaments, Softball State Tournaments, the Cornhusker State Games, and many more.
Since 1982, it has also run the High School Scholar Athlete Program, recognizing outstanding senior student-athletes with support from sponsors PlaySmart and Cetera Investments. Another cornerstone initiative is the All Nebraska/All State Program, which honors top high school athletes across the state, celebrating excellence both on the field and in the classroom. These programs not only recognize achievement but also encourage discipline, teamwork, and academic success among young athletes. The Sports Committee’s enduring commitment reflects how long-term vision, community involvement, and intergenerational dedication can build a stronger, more vibrant local culture. Their work continues to inspire future leaders, athletes, and organizers across the region.
Besides the many Sports minded members, area Hotel General Managers and Sales Managers attend the meetings to stay involved and be aware of what is happening in the Sports scene in Omaha and the area.
