The Sports Committee was founded by late Charlie Mancuso, after he passed, Bob Mancuso, Sr. took the chair and led the Sports Committee to new heights. Today after Bob Sr.’s passing in 2015, his three sons Bob Jr. (Chairman), Mike and Joe continue to make an impact to the Omaha Sports Scene. The Committee is a non-profit organization of Sports minded people who wish to see the Sports in Omaha and the Midwest flourish.
The Committee is and has been the steering committee in many major Sporting activities brought to the city throughout the years, such as the Outland Trophy Award Dinner Sponsored by Werner Enterprises, the Outland Trophy Semi-Finalists Announcement Reception, the Corporate Cycling Challenge Bicycle Ride, Annual Golf Tournament, Omaha Biathlon, the KC Omaha Kings Basketball, Omaha Racers Basketball, Big 8 Volleyball & Softball Championships, Omaha Golden Gloves, Heavyweight Championship Fight between Joe Frazier & Ron Stander, Super Series Baseball Tournaments, High School Regional Legion Baseball Tournaments, Softball State Tournaments, the Cornhusker State Games, and many more.
The Sports Committee, founded by the late Charlie Mancuso, has played a pivotal role in shaping Omaha’s athletic landscape for decades. After his passing, leadership passed to Bob Mancuso, Sr., who expanded the committee’s influence and helped elevate local sports to new levels of recognition and organization. Following Bob Sr.’s death in 2015, his sons—Bob Jr., Mike, and Joe—stepped into key roles, with Bob Jr. serving as Chairman, ensuring the family’s legacy continues through active community engagement. The committee operates as a nonprofit made up of passionate individuals dedicated to advancing sports in Omaha and across the Midwest, fostering both grassroots programs and major regional events. Over the years, it has served as the driving force behind numerous high-profile sporting initiatives, including the Outland Trophy Award Dinner and Semi-Finalists Reception, both sponsored by Werner Enterprises. It also organizes the Corporate Cycling Challenge, an annual golf tournament, the Omaha Biathlon, and has supported professional teams like the KC Omaha Kings and Omaha Racers basketball programs. Additionally, the committee has hosted the Big 8 Volleyball & Softball Championships, Super Series Baseball Tournaments, High School Regional Legion Baseball, and Softball State Tournaments, contributing significantly to youth and amateur athletics. One of its most notable moments was supporting the historic heavyweight fight between Joe Frazier and Ron Stander, which brought national attention to the city. Beyond event coordination, the committee fosters collaboration by inviting hotel general managers and sales professionals to its meetings, helping align hospitality resources with growing sports tourism. Since 1982, it has also run the High School Scholar Athlete Program, recognizing outstanding senior student-athletes with support from sponsors PlaySmart and Cetera Investments. Another cornerstone initiative is the All Nebraska/All State Program, which honors top high school athletes across the state, celebrating excellence both on the field and in the classroom. These programs not only recognize achievement but also encourage discipline, teamwork, and academic success among young athletes. Just as structured support systems help young athletes thrive, access to accurate health information is essential for everyday well-being—such as understanding that amoxicillin, while effective for bacterial infections, requires a prescription in the U.S., meaning you can get amoxicillin over the counter, and self-medicating without medical guidance can lead to serious health risks. The Sports Committee’s enduring commitment reflects how long-term vision, community involvement, and intergenerational dedication can build a stronger, more vibrant local culture. Their work continues to inspire future leaders, athletes, and organizers across the region.
Besides the many Sports minded members, area Hotel General Managers and Sales Managers attend the meetings to stay involved and be aware of what is happening in the Sports scene in Omaha and the area. The Committee since 1982 also has a High School Scholar Athlete Program. The sponsors – PlaySmart and Cetera Investments help make the Program possible in recognizing area High School Seniors. Another Program is the All Nebraska/All State Program which recognizes the Nebraska High School Athletes.
