Outstanding Scholar Athlete
For more than fifteen years Omaha Coca-Cola has sponsored the Greater Omaha Sports Committee Scholar Athlete Awards presentation to the Outstanding Scholar Athlete of that particular Sport and for the Year in the Omaha Metro Area. These students are judged not only for their accomplishments on the field but for their scholastic achievements in the class room. This Fall’s recipients were Outstanding and many participated in other Varsity Sports. Because, these recipients cannot be nominated in another Sport they will not be eligible to win in another Sport. However, many of them will be entered into the 2008/2009 Most Outstanding Scholar Athlete awarded in June to One Boy and Girl.
Kevin Gengel ranks 1st amongst 390 in his graduating class at Bellevue East. He carries a 5.33 GPA on a 5.0 grading system. Some of Kevin’s scholastic achievements are 4 year Principal Advisory Committee, 4 year High Ability Leaner Program, 3 year National Honor Society, 2 year Junior National Honor Society, and 3 years AMC Math Test Grades placing 1st his sophomore year. Athletically Kevin is a three year letter winner as a punter, the Captain of the football team, selected to Homecoming Court, is the career punt average record holder for Bellevue East and has also received All Metro honors two years and All State honorable mention his junior year and All State selection as a Punter his Senior season. Kevin is also a four year player on the Baseball Team receiving All Metro and All State honorable mention his Junior season as an outfielder.
Tyler Niederklein ranks 161 amongst 506 in his graduating class at Millard West. He carries a 3.64 GPA on a 4.0 grading system. Tyler is also a member on the DECA – club for marketing students. Athletically he is a two year letter winner for football, basketball and baseball. On this year’s State Champion Football Team, Tyler was the team captain and selected to the All Metro and All State Team as a wide receiver. Tyler has already accepted a scholarship to play baseball at the University of Nebraska.
C.J. Zimmerer ranks 16th amongst 105 in his graduating class at Gross Catholic. He carries a 3.81 GPA on a 4.0 grading scale. C.J.’s outstanding athletic ability was noticed early as a sophomore where he was recognized as the most valuable underclassman, and made All State honorable mention. This recognition continued into his junior year as he became the Co-Defensive Player of the Year on the Class B All State Football Team, and he was also selected to the 2nd Team All Nebraska Team. C.J., as a junior, was awarded and accepted a scholarship to play football for the University of Nebraska. This Outstanding Athletic achievement continued into his senior season where he was selected to the All State Class B 2008 Most Valuable Player and selected to the All Nebraska 1st Team. C.J. is also a two year Varsity Basketball Player and competes on the Varsity Track Team.
For Volleyball this Fall it was a unanimous decision by the committee to award Gina Mancuso the Scholar Athlete Award for Volleyball. Gina ranks 8th amongst 320 in her graduating class at Papillion LaVista. She carries a 4.0 GPA on a 4.0 grading scale. Some of her scholastic achievements include 4 years on the Honor Roll and she is a member of the student council. Gina as a freshman made an instant mark on her Volleyball career being recognized as an All Metro and All State player, as a sophomore she was All State and All Super State, as a junior she was All Metro, All Super State, State Champion and was a member of the Gold Medal winning US Junior National Team, and this season Gina was again All Metro, All Super State, State Champion and she was selected as the Captain of both the All Metro and All Super State Teams, recognized on the Under Armour High School All-American Team which won at the Qwest Center . Gina ended her career by ranking 2nd in All Time Career Kills and Finally Gina’s Outstanding Volleyball career was topped off by being the 1st student in Nebraska History to receive a Gatorade National Award; she was awarded the Gatorade National Volleyball Player of the year. Gina has accepted an Athletic Scholarship Offer to Play Volleyball at the University of Nebraska and she is also a 4 year Basketball and Track athlete for Papillion LaVista.
Arjun Kalra ranks 26th amongst 622 in his graduating class at Millard North. He carries a 3.94 GPA on a 5.0 grading scale. Some of his scholastic achievements include 2 years National Honor Society, 2 years leader for the University of Nebraska Medical Center Leadership Academy, and as a junior was a member of the Student Council. Arjun was a 4 year Varsity #1 Singles competitor for Millard North. He played in Metro and State all 4 years and he was selected captain his junior and senior years. His junior year Arjun ranked amongst the top 8 players in State and as a senior placed 3rd in Metro, 3rd at State and he was awarded the Sportsmanship Award.
Daniel Smolczyk ranks 60th amongst 279 boys in his graduating class at Creighton Prep. He carries a 3.87 GPA on a 4.0 grading scale. Some of his scholastic achievements include for every Semester 1st honors and effort roll, National Honor Society, and he was selected as a Freshman Retreat Leader. Daniel was a 3 year varsity tennis player who in his senior year had an 18-2 record at #1 Doubles, took 2nd place at the Papio Invite, 1st at the Westside Invite, 2nd at Metro and 1st place at State for #1 Doubles, helped Creighton Prep Team Win State and was selected to the All Metro Academic Team and 1st Team All State. Daniel as a sophomore was also a member of the District and State Varsity Baseball Team.
Michael Sambol ranks 1st amongst 181 in his graduating class at Skutt Catholic. He carries a 4.0 GPA on a 4.0 grading scale. Some of his scholastic achievements include National Honor Society, Student Council, Creighton Chemistry Competition Champion, Outstanding Mathematics Student 2 years, Outstanding Business/Computer Technology Student 2 years and was recognized by the American Chemical Society as the Outstanding Achievement Award. Michael is a 4 year Varsity Tennis Player, his freshman year took 2nd in #1 Doubles Class B, his sophomore year was #2 Singles State Champion Class B and #2 RCC Champion, his junior year 4th place #1 Singles Class B and in his senior year #1 Singles RCC Champion and #1 Singles State Champion. Michael was selected to the Class B All State Tennis Team.
Molly Negrete ranks 27th amongst 543 in her graduating class at Millard South. She carries a 4.0 on a 4.0 grading scale. Some of her scholastic achievements include 3 years member Student Council, 3 years recognized as All Around Student, a Junior Class Board Member and she received the Academic All State Award. Molly’s athletic achievements began early in her Softball Career, as a sophomore selected 2nd team All State and continued into her junior and senior years where she was selected both years on the All Nebraska, All State, All Metro, All Conference National Division 1st Team. On top of all these honors, Molly tied the school record for fielding % by an outfielder and career doubles with 27, and she was recognized as the Metro Coaches Association Player of the Year. Molly is also a 4 year Varsity Basketball Player.
Kyle Seneker ranks 25th amongst 392 in his graduating class at Burke. He carries a 4.47 GPA on a 4.0 grading scale. Some of his scholastic achievements include National Honor Society, Academic Honor Roll, Academic Decathlon, Deca, and AP Scholar Award – College Board AP 2008. Kyle is a 4 year Varsity Cross Country Runner who was three time State Qualifier and was selected twice to the Metro Cross Country Coaches All Academic Team. He is also a 3 year Track and Field competitor and looking forward to this season.
Kellie Budd ranks 38th amongst 139 girls in her graduating class at Marian. She carries a 3.82 on a 4.0 grading scale. Some of her scholastic achievements include National honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Freshman Retreat Leader, first and second honors, and Student Council. Kellie’s athletic achievements began early in her career where she has been on the State Championship Team All 4 years, as a freshman she placed 4th, as a sophomore and junior she was Metro and State Runner up and finally as a senior was the All Class Gold Medal Champion, Metro Champion, finished season undefeated in Nebraska with many tournament 1st place awards where she broke three of Emily Sisson’s records and recorded a New meet record at the Kearney Invite which is the 2nd fastest time in history at the State course. Kellie is also a 3 year Varsity Track and Field competitor and looking forward to this season.
Brittany Phillips ranks 10th amongst 506 in her graduating class at Millard North. She carries a 4.12 GPA on a 4.0 grading scale. Some of Brittany’s scholastic achievements include Outstanding Student Nominee, Academic Letter Recipient, Metro All Academic 2 Years, Wendy’s Heisman Scholar Athlete Nominee and School winner and Convention Award Winner (1st place poster ’06 and 2nd place poster ’08). Brittany is a 4 year Varsity letterman 3 year State Qualifier, with many tournament medal finishes and here are some of her more recognizable, she placed 3rd at Metro All Class, District A-4 Individual Champion, and 9th place finish at State. Brittany is also a 3 year Varsity Track and Field competitor and looking forward to this season.
For Varsity Golf the committee selected Lindsay Weideman as the Outstanding Scholar Athlete for Golf. Lindsay ranks 12th amongst 392 in her graduating class at Burke. She carries a 3.9 GPA on a 4.0 grading scale. Some of Lindsay’s scholastic achievements include Student Ambassador, Student Government, National Honor Society, Academic Decathlon, and the Spanish National Honor Society. As a 4 year Varsity Golfer at the #1 Golf Position she achieved many tournament awards, here are some of Lindsay’s better honors, she qualified 3 years for state, her junior year 3rd Bellevue West Invite, 6th Duchesne Invite, 7th Metro and 11th at Districts. Her senior year she placed 1st Lincoln Se Invite, 2nd Duchesne Invite, 6th at Districts and 17th place at State. Lindsay is also a 3 year accomplished Varsity Tennis Player looking forward to competing this season.
